History of the papercut – “Maja-li”
My dear friend Maja-Li came to the studio one day with an old Modigliano poster that she wanted framed. Time passed on and somehow the poster got lost in the studio. I searched for the poster all over the place but I couldn’t find it!? I knew that the poster meant a lot to her and I couldn’t tell her that it was lost. So I decided to make a real painting for her with the same motif. I created this papercut so I could use it as a stencil to make the painting. When the painting was done I invited her to the studio without telling her anything about the lost poster or that I had made a new painting for her. When she came to the studio and saw the new painting she fell into tears of joy, she couldn’t believe that I had made it for her. I then told her about the lost poster which didn’t really matter by now. The history of lost poster took a new turn in a new shape and form, the old feelings and memories were kept and new feeling and memories arose. Value was created in form of feelings and memories. This is what matters, this is what we will remember in the last days of our lives.
The painting given to her was a gift for our 11 years of friendship. The act of friendship and my oblivion are the reason why this papercut to exist.
This is the original papercut, the Mother of all the paintings and street art made with this papercut. The papercut is handmade and cut out with a simple knife. The process in very time consuming and requires enormous amounts of patience and detail work. The papercut has been used during 1 year in Sweden leaving an imprint of the picture everywhere it has been used. The energy that once created the papercut has been re-used many times creating new artwork. – Moses
